When a Weakness is mistaken as a Strength
Dear Diary,
I came online and a newsfeed updated me..." Local actor, comedian and film director 50-year-old Jack Neo confessed to a 2-year affair with part-time model 22-year-old Wendy Chong". Usually, that doesn't really bother me since why do I care about Jack Neo? Haha... There are so many cases of such infidelity and adultery reported each day. Yet, this newsfeed came right after I read the article "Addicted to Sex - Illness or Excuse" by Goh Chin Lian on the Sunday Times (pg. 33) today. After all, haven't we already heard that high profile adultery by Tiger Woods who then asked for forgiveness on national TV? Shortly after that, England football captain John Terry admitted to adultery and was stripped of his captaincy by staunchly-Catholic England manager Fabio Capello. Then how English leftback Ashley Cole is on the verge of breakdown after his wife wanted out of the marriage upon revelation of his affair? Now... Jack Neo... our local representative... Hmmm... If only they knew it all coming. No secret is forever a secret.
What they did was wrong, no doubt about that. However, we shouldn't stand there sneering away either because if you are genetically XY-type, with the whole body full of testosterone that occasionally drives you crazy, then you better not be complacent, haha... With reference to the above stated Sunday Times article ( http://www.transitioning.org/2010/03/06/addicted-to-sex-illness-or-excuse-sunday-times-7-mar/ ) It is interesting how Psychiatrist Karasu pointed out that every man is a sex addict because it is an evolutionary innate urge to impregnate as many females as possible, hence a natural phenomenon.
Evolutionary biology expert, Assoc Prof Meier elaborated further saying that it is simple mathematics because the one with a stronger sex drive will likely be over-represented in the next generation. However, he admitted that sex drive alone does not account for errant sexual behaviour. "Just because our genes may tempt us to seek out experiences that excite the pleasure centre in our mind doesn't mean we have to follow these urges. Being Human means overcoming such biases and biological instincts." He continued.... Actually, I thought the latter statement was excellent said.
The whole thing is not to debate whether it stems from the biology / physiology of a person or from the psycho-emotional aspects etc... the crux is that we are not animals driven by instincts alone without any moral obligations. Must we always be satisfied and self-centric in our conduct? Do we explain our mistakes by saying we are born like this? If the defect was a congenital heart defect, will anyone not seek to ratify it even though it is "innate"?
No man would want a cheating spouse and obviously he cannot justify that for himself either. It is not that sex-obsessed guy who is most "manly" but rather that average devoted family man who, despite his testosterone-raging, resists temptation and remains faithful. If you are that kind of a man... You are the MAN! Haha.. not those Hollywood fellas who lack willpower and discipline to control themselves. Give yourself a pat on the back. Don't be complacent though and persevere! Hahaha...
It is good to fast in Lent. It reminds us that we cannot always satisfy ourselves.... and when needed, should sacrifice for our loved ones, our neighbours (not literally but anyone who interacts with us in life) or for the greater good! ;-) Yes, if the fast is about food, it should remind us about God and not about losing weight! =P
Someone recommended me to catch the movie "Shawshank Redemption". You can join me to catch it at your own location when you tune in on Okto tonight at 10pm. We will watch it together, hahaha... =P
God Bless,
Andrew
