Pedestrian Alert!

Dear Diary,

Today, I actually visited the Singapore Science Centre for the first time since two decades ago? Yes, it was really that long time back. The place has been enlarged at the expense of the carpark space. Since my friend had the corporate card, entry was free-of-charge. We went there right after the 8am service which we attended at St Andrew’s Cathedral. The Science Centre is pretty interesting and there were many puzzles which we patiently took time to solve. Did a couple of experiments and I even could spin a plate on a stick! =) Watched how the Tesla coil ignited and combusted the hydrogen-filled balloons... Awesome. Little did we know that we took almost 6 hours to complete checking out all the exhibits.

Anyway, just a warning to those who love standing at the edge of the pavement while waiting for the pedestrian-crossing traffic lights to show the “green man”... Try to stand as deep into the pavement as possible! I practically witnessed an accident after I alighted a friend from my car that Saturday afternoon (yesterday). As I was waiting in my car at the traffic light junction near Toa Payoh Hub and the PIE, I noticed a Toyota Wish trying to do an illegal U-turn. Unfortunately, the car veered off course and went onto the pavement, ploughing into the two pedestrians waiting there. The male pedestrian was thrown backwards onto the ground and the car pinned the female pedestrian’s leg against the lamp-post. The lady was quiet initially, in shock I guess. Then she started to wail loudly. A couple of car drivers nearby came out to help, asking the slightly damaged Toyota Wish driver to reverse back a little so that the lady’s leg could be extricated. The lady managed to wriggle her leg out... so I guess it wasn’t as bad.

The Toyota Wish driver stepped out to help... It was a lady driver. The traffic lights turned green and I drove off into the PIE. A series of honking went off as the other impatient drivers insisted the helping drivers return to their cars to prevent that obstruction and leave that lady alone. Couldn’t they just divert away from those stationary cars??? It is all about a “me, myself and I” society. So, don’t ever assume that you are safe just because you are on the pavement or that the green-man has come on. Look out for cars before you cross even if the traffic lights are in your favour as pedestrian. The drivers are very reckless these days and their cars are getting faster and more powerful.

Okay, that’s about it. A nice fruitful and eventful weekend! Hope yours was so too. To bed now for the new work week ahead. ;-) Goodnight.

God Bless,

Andrew
